I've rewritten this Newbie Guide to update the information and make everything easier to read! My last setup guide was a simple page on my website, so hopefully switching this all to blog posts will make the formatting more consistent across devices and easier for everyone to read through.
If you have any questions or issues about a particular section, feel free to drop a comment and I'll do my best to help!

Terminology
Vtube Studio (VTS): The tracking software that captures your face and turns it into character motion
Model/Rig/Avatar: The character you pilot
Pilot: The person controlling the model
Plugin: 3rd party software that connects with VTube Studio, allowing you and your stream audience to interact with your rig in new ways.
Parameter: All the movements a vtuber can make are separated into individual parameters. i.e. Turning the head left and right is the parameter Face_Angle_X, whilst looking up and down is Face_Angle_Y.
Physics: Indirect movement that is tied to specific actions. Hair only bounces when the model’s head moves a certain way, etc. You don’t have direct control over physics, it just happens as a result of your movement.

Expression: A state that overrides your facial tracking, toggled on/off by a hotkey. This includes outfit changes, props, and poses.

Animation: An animation that overrides the facial tracking, triggered by a hotkey. It does not need to be switched off; when it ends, the model goes back to normal and tracking resumes.

Animated Expression: An animation that holds on the final frame. It must be switched off to disable it. (i.e. the sweat drop stays visible after the animation finishes)

Idle: A constant looping animation that plays the entire time your model is active (even if it animates a prop or detail that isn’t always visible).

Prop: A term I use for items baked into the rig. These objects are attached to the model file, and may be rigged so that the model can interact with them directly.

Item: A static object that is added to the character in VTube Studio. They can be detailed and animated, but are simply pinned to the model.
Mouth Forms (3x3 vs 5x5): The number of shapes that the mouth is capable of making. 5x5 is slightly more detailed than 3x3, but neither are as responsive or sophisticated as VBridger forms.
